What kinds of jobs are available to accounting graduates?
Accounting majors work either in public accounting or in private accounting. Public accountants usually provide tax or assurance (audit) services. Employment in the the accounting and finance department of corporations, governmental organizations or non-profit agencies fall under private accounting (non-public accounting)

What are the employment prospects for accounting graduates?

Others for whom training in accounting is valuable include budget analysts; cost estimators; loan officers; financial analysts and personal financial advisors; tax examiners, collectors, and revenue agents; bill and account collectors; and bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks. Recently, some accountants have assumed the role of management analysts and are involved in the design, implementation, and maintenance of accounting software systems. Others who perform similar work include computer programmers, computer software engineers, and computer support specialists and systems administrators.

Who are the major employers of UMPI's accounting graduates?
DFAS has in recent years become the major employer of UMPI graduates.

In addition to DFAS, most of the larger employers in the area (hospitals and allied establishments, banks, non-profits etcs.) have hired UMPI graduates.
A good number of UMPI graduates have also gone into public accounting. As a result most of the area Public Accounting (CPA) Firms have UMPI graduates working for them.

What is the average class size?
Introductory accounting classes usually have around 25 to 30 students, and upper level classes have 15 to 20 students.

Accounting students often participate in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) that is offered in partnership with the IRS.
The VITA Program offers free tax help to low- to moderate-income (generally, $40,000 and below) people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Certified volunteers sponsored by various organizations receive training to help prepare basic tax returns in communities across the country. VITA sites are generally located at community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls, and other convenient locations. - IRS

Many of the accounting majors often join the Professional Business Leaders Club (PHI BETA LAMDA). The Club is designed to provide important networking opportunities within the business and accounting world and to serve the needs of campus and community through sponsorship of workshops, panels, and guest speakers. UMPI accounting majors have attended the national conference and placed in the top 10 in the national competion (exam) in subjects covered in the accounting curriculum.
