dOMESTIC sTUDENT CHECKLIST
 

Domestic Student Checklist

STEP 1: Activate your MaineStreet Account

Upon acceptance, you will receive a letter from admission by email that includes your UMPI ID number and activation pin. You must follow the steps indicated on the letter to activate your Mainestreet Account. (Skip this step if you have already set up your account at a University of Maine System School). 

STEP 2: Pay your Tuition Deposit

Log into your Mainestreet Account and under the “Finance” section, select “Pay your Tuition Deposit.” The Tuition Deposit is $50. Please note that the deposit is required to be paid before you can register for classes. 

STEP 3: Submit Immunization Records

Due to state law, all degree seeking students attending in person must submit proof of immunization. For more information on immunization requirements and to learn how to submit proof of immunizations, please visit our Health Center webpage.

STEP 4: Apply for Housing 

If you intend to live on campus, you must submit a Room and Board Housing Contract. To apply for housing, please visit our Residence Life webpage. There are more than one housing application. Please select the one based on your start date. Please note that students must be registered in 12 credits during a semester in order to live in the residence halls.

STEP 5: Campus Visit

Sign up for an Individual Campus Visit (Skip this step if you have already visited campus.)

STEP 6: Submit FAFSA

If you have not submitted your FAFSA for the current school year,  we recommend that you do so.

STEP 7: Research Learning Experience

UPDATE! UMPI is piloting a new program ahead of orientation for first-year students–our Research Learning Experience (RLE). UMPI’s RLE program, which includes a 3-day bridge experience prior to orientation and coursework during the fall, and will give you real, hands-on, professor-guided research opportunities during your first year of college. Rooms and meals will be free for first-year students during the 3-day bridge.  Please visit our RLE webpage to learn more.

STEP 8: Upload Photo For UMPI ID Card

After you pay your deposit you will receive an email from Card Services with a link and instructions on how to upload a photo that will be used on your ID card. If you do not receive this email, please first check your spam box and if not there, please contact admissions; they will work with Card Services to have it resent. If you do not upload your photo, you have the option to take the photo and have your card printed in the CIL during regular business hours of 8AM-4:30PM.  (Note: If you are a distance education student, you can contact IT Manager Marteen Hester at marteen.hester@maine.edu to request your card be mailed to you. )

STEP 9: Create your EAB Navigate Account

In your portal you will see an icon of a blue pillar in your Mainstreet Launchpad. Please click on the pillar to take you into EAB Navigate. You will be prompted to create an account. It is important that you do so as your academic advisors communicate with you via EAB Navigate.

100% Online International Student Checklist

Admissions will connect you to your Academic Advisor. You will work with them to select your classes.

In Person International Student Checklist

STEP 2: Pay your Tuition Deposit

Log into your Mainestreet Account and under the “Finance” section, select “Pay your Tuition Deposit.” The Tuition Deposit is $50. Please note that the deposit is required to be paid before you can register for classes. 

Step 3: Request I-20 (Not Applicable for Non F-1 International Students)

If you wish to study in the US as an F-1 international Student you must submit the “Request an I-20 Form.” Please note that in order to submit the form you must attach your Financial Affidavit Form, Proof of Finances, Copy of Passport, and Tuition Deposit. If any field or attachment is missing, the I-20 Request will not be reviewed. To complete the forms, please visit our International Student Services webpage. 

Please note that due to SEVP guidelines, UMPI is unable to issue an I-20 to a student until they have full, unconditional admission into their program which means that they have:

  • Applied and were accepted into UMPI
  • Paid their deposit fee to matriculate
  • Submitted their final high school transcript to UMPI Admissions
  • Submitted their Request an I-20 Form, Financial Affidavit Form, and attached relevant required documentation. 

Step 4: Pay the I-901 Fee (Not Applicable for Non F-1 International Students)

Once you have received the I-20, you must visit the USCIS webpage to pay your I-901 fee. Select the “Pay I-901 Fee.” You must be attached to a printer, as you will need to print the I-901 receipt to take to your visa appointment (Step 5) or to cross at the US-Canada Border for the first time for Canadians. Note:

  • You will be prompted to enter our school code number which is:
    •  Houlton Higher Education Center- POM214F00011001
    •  University of Maine at Presque Isle -POM214F00011000POM214
  • You will also be prompted to enter your SEVIS ID number which can be found in the top right section of your I-20 and begins with the letter “N”. 

Step 5: Apply for Visa (Not Applicable for Canadians and Non F-1 International Students)

Applying for the F-1 student visa may vary depending on the U.S. embassy or consulate you are dealing with. You will be required to pay a non-refundable visa application fee. There is an online visa application available, which allows you to complete and print the Form DS-160 to take to your F-1 visa interview.

SPECIAL NOTE: If you are admitted to UMPI in a visa/status category other than F-1 that permits you to study in the US and that visa/status is going to expire and/or or you wish to request a change of status to F-1 international student, please contact the International Student Services Office by email umpi-iss@maine.edu for guidance.
