University of Maine at Presque Isle hosts 108th Commencement

One hundred and seventy-six students graduated from the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Saturday, May 13, during the 2017 Commencement Exercises—the University’s 108th Commencement ceremony. UMPI Interim President and Provost Raymond Rice conferred degrees for the 2016-2017 academic year upon 126 students who participated in the ceremony held in Wieden Gymnasium.

Wintergreen, UMPI present northern Maine’s third annual color-filled 5K

The University of Maine at Presque Isle and the Wintergreen Arts Center are teaming up again to present one of The County’s most unique and fun-filled 5K fundraisers—the Third Annual Color Presque Isle 5K, where participants dress in white and get showered with colored powder throughout the course. The event, which serves as a benefit for arts programming in downtown Presque Isle, will be held on Saturday, Aug. 22 at 9 a.m. starting at Riverside Park. Registration begins at 8 a.m.

University to host Mwika Musicians from Tanzania

Donations needed for international cultural exchange

PRESQUE ISLE—The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Bachelor of Social Work Program is hosting the Mwika Musicians, a delegation from Tanzania, this fall for the international cultural exchange of a lifetime. Twelve student musicians from Stefano Moshi Memorial University College in Mwika, Tanzania, their choral director, and the college’s principal will be visiting Maine for two weeks to share their culture and traditions, experience the culture and music in the U.S., and build upon existing collaborations between UMPI and the Tanzanian college.

National Space Society sponsors “From Pluto” run

The National Space Society, an informal group of space enthusiasts who join together for camaraderie and education, has provided a $3,000 grant to support the “From Pluto at the Speed of Light” run along the Maine Solar System Model. This first-of-its-kind event—billed as the fastest run ever performed by humans because it will be conducted at “light speed” (186,000 miles per second) along the Maine Solar System Model—takes place on July 15 and is being hosted by the University of Maine at Presque Isle [UMPI], the Northern Maine Museum of Science [NMMS] and the northern Maine running community.

UMPI hosts Camp Invention, national summer program fostering creativity and problem-solving skills

The University of Maine at Presque Isle is pleased to announce that it will be bringing Camp Invention—the nation’s premier summer enrichment day camp program supported by the National Inventors Hall of Fame and the United States Patent and Trademark Office—to campus the week of August 3 to 7. The weeklong day camp for students entering grades one through six fosters innovation and creativity while also building self-esteem, teamwork, persistence, and goal-setting skills.

Reed Gallery presents Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Reed Fine Art Gallery presents the 2015 Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition, BFA 15: Selections from Senior Show, featuring selected works created by four graduating UMPI art students, through August 8. The public is invited to view the exhibition and attend a reception, being held in conjunction with the First Friday Art Walk, on Friday, July 3 from 5-7 p.m. in the Reed Gallery.

Northern Maine celebrates New Horizons Mission with run “at the speed of light”

On July 15, northern Maine will host the fastest run ever performed by humans: at “light speed” (186,000 miles per second) along the Maine Solar System Model. The run is being held in honor of the NASA New Horizons spacecraft which, after a nine-year voyage, will fly past and study Pluto in mid-July during the close encounter. As the first post-flyby images are returning to Earth at the speed of light on the morning of July 15, groups of runners will simulate the photo signal by running from Pluto to Earth along the Maine Solar System Model through the various small towns and villages in the rural northeast corner of the United States along U.S. Route 1.

Employees honored during annual recognition event

The University of Maine at Presque Isle honored several employees for their years of service during the annual Employee Recognition Reception held on May 21. Twenty-three employees were recognized for their combined 315 years of service to the University. Employees were honored with various tokens of appreciation, from clocks to framed art.
