Opportunities to Study in France and Quebec

Study in France for a semester

This is a University of Maine System opportunity. It allows you to go and study for a semester at one of the French universities that have signed an agreement with the System. They are:
1. Université du Maine in Le Mans,
2. Université d'Angers,
3. Université de Nantes,
4. Université de Bretagne Occidentale in Brest

Who can go?

Students can take advantage of this opportunity in most fields of study. Thy can take courses in history, business, science, math, law, physical education (in Brest), etc.

Note: If you are a student in arts, you will be able to go and study art at a Beaux-Arts school located in the same towns as the French universities

What do I need to prepare for the semester abroad?
  1. Students must have taken at least 4 semesters of college French or have achieved the equivalent in order to be able to fully benefit from the experience.
  2. Students need to talk to their advisor early on in their studies at UM-Presque Isle to make sure that they draw up a program of studies, in order to know what courses to take prior to going away and what courses in France will count..
What will I do in France?

Students will go through an orientation period at the French university which will consist of a crash language course in French and culture. After the orientation, students will continue to study French, but will also take regular courses with French students in their area. All the universities are close enough to Paris that weekend trips can be arranged. The area is also full of interesting sites.

Do I get credits?

Students will receive credits for your semester in France. They will appear as transfer credits on their transcript.

How do I register?

A student will need to fill out an application form at UMPI in the fall (for the spring semester in Le Mans, sponsored by UM-Farmington) or early spring for the system-wide programs. The university will recommend the applicant to the system-level committee by March 15. Exchange students will be accepted/placed by April 1st or 15.

Where do I pay tuition?

Except for the program sponsored by UM-Farmington, students will pay tuition at UM-Presque Isle. Housing and meals will be paid to the French institution. Most of the time, students will be housed in a university dorm. The costs associated with room and board are cheaper in France that at the American university.

Do a summer French immersion program in Quebec

This program is not sponsored by the University of Maine at Presque Isle, but it is approved by it. In fact it is strongly recommended that any student wanting to improve fluency in France take advantage of it.

Where and how long?

The program lasts 5 weeks and takes place at Université Laval in Quebec City.

How many credits?

Students receive 6 credits that appear as transfer credits on their transcript.

How do I apply?

Students apply as individuals by filling out an electronic application. Once they are accepted, Université Laval will send a placement test that students will take online. This is to ensure that they are placed at the proper level..

There are two sessions to choose from:

  1. First session from May to June: Apply by April 1.
  2. Second session from July to August: Apply by May 1.
Where do I pay tuition?

Students pay tuition, room and board directly to the University Laval. Canadian students can apply to receive a scholarship from the bursary. American students can apply for one of two UMPI scholarships.

What students think of the program?

UMPI students who have gone to Quebec rave about the program and want to return!

Study for a semester in Quebec

In the near future, it will be possible for UMPI students to go and study for a semester at one of the University de Québec sites.
