To provide a little insight on this region we call home, the image newsletter is providing this new feature, County Corner. Each month, we’ll share fun facts or interesting statistics. There are lots of things that make The County a fascinating and wonderful place for our UMPI community to live, learn, work, and play, and we’re proud to be able to share some of those tidbits with you!
Aroostook County is a natural resources treasure trove, with 2,000 lakes, rivers, and streams. In fact, did you know that Aroostook is a Native American word meaning “beautiful river”? This place is home to the 92-mile-long Allagash Wilderness Waterway, 2,000 miles of snowmobile trails, world-class biathlon and Nordic skiing facilities, the 22,000-acre Deboullie Public Reserved Land (part of the 3.5 million acres that make up the North Maine Woods), and a plethora of wildlife and birding opportunities. And that’s just to name a few. It’s a lot to take in and we encourage everyone to get out there and explore it!
