College of Arts and Sciences
At the center of any great college are strong arts and sciences.

The faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences are dedicated to the discovery, construction, and integration of knowledge. Together with our students, we are engaged in critical and creative thinking, innovative and experiential teaching, and important and meaningful service to our communities and their citizens. We believe that the mission of the "liberal arts"-or the artes liberales, the education of "free persons" in its original Latin-is to prepare students for a lifelong process of intellectual engagement and interaction with the world in all its complexity and multitude.

We offer a wide variety of majors spanning the humanities, behavioral and social sciences, natural science, and fine arts, together with outstanding student-faculty interaction, small classes, the opportunity for advanced undergraduate research, a close knowledge of a variety of second languages, and the ability-no matter your major-to communicate clearly and think critically.

Students/Projects:

Some of our students have helped to bring local history to life by working with Dr. Richard Graves, a local historian, to produce a book that covered 150 years of Presque Isle history.

Biology students Alison Kiefer and Darren Pelletier have conducted research at sites such as the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory and the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

Led by the Northern Maine Museum of Science, volunteers from the campus and community teamed up to make one of the largest scale models of the Solar System a reality.

Students in John DeFelice's Special Topics in Ancient History class presented a production of the Greek comedy Lysistrata.

For the past eight years, our English majors have attended the National Undergraduate Literature Conference, held in Ogden, Utah. The conference has given them the chance to present their work in a professional conference setting and learn from some of the most influential writers in contemporary literature.
