Eligibility Criteria

Prior to student teaching, the student must:
- Be admitted into the Teacher Education Program.
Note: Students wishing to enter the Teacher Education Program are eligible to apply upon the successful completion of 45 semester hours of required course work. Students seeking entrance into the program may obtain additional information from their advisors or the Office of Student Teaching.
- Complete a minimum of 90 credit hours of course work to include the required professional education sequence.
- Formally apply to the Director of Student Teaching at least one semester prior to placement and be approved by departmental faculty.
Note: Formal applications are available in the Office of Student Teaching.
- Have a 2.50 GPA cumulative average (minimum).
Have a 2.50 GPA in your major AND the professional sequence.
Have a 2.50 GPA the semester prior to student teaching.
Have completed all professional education courses.
Have satisfactory evaluations in all prior field experiences.
Has passed the PRAXIS I: Academic Skills Assessment test (reading, writing and math)
Have taken PRAXIS II.
Have completed the fingerprinting process.
Note: For more detailed information regarding state and university testing, check with your advisor or the Office of Student Teaching.
Maine Standards for Initial Teacher Certification
In order to help students achieve the Learning Results, the beginning teacher:
- Demonstrates knowledge of the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) s/he teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful to students.
- Demonstrates the ability to integrate the concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures among the disciplines.
- Demonstrates a knowledge of the diverse ways in which students learn and develop by providing learning opportunities that support their intellectual, physical, emotional, and social development.
- Plans instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, students, and curriculum goals.
- Understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies and appropriate technologies.
- Creates and maintains a classroom environment which supports and encourages learning.
- Demonstrates the ability to support students' learning and well-being by engaging students, home, school, colleagues, and community.
- Understands and uses a variety of formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and support the development of the leaner.
- Demonstrates an awareness of and commitment to ethical and legal responsibilities of a teacher.
- Demonstrates a strong professional ethic and a desire to contribute to the education profession.
Teacher Education Majors Program Check List
If you have completed 45 or more credit hours, have you:
- Completed your Self-Initiated Field Experiences?
- Taken the Praxis I test?
- Achieved a CGPA of 2.5?
- Put together your portfolio?
- Applied for admission into the Teacher Education Program?
If you are going out student teaching in Spring, 2007, have you:
- Been admitted to the teacher education program through the portfolio process?
- Notified the Director of Student Teaching and Field Experiences?
- Passed the Praxis I test?
- Taken the Praxis II test?
- Maintained a 2.5 GPA or better in Education and in your concentration?
- Had your fingerprinting done?
