“Home for the Holidays” - Caribou Alum Share College Experience
Twenty-one Caribou High School graduates, representing fourteen different colleges and universities in the United States and Canada, participated in a "Home for the Holidays" panel at Caribou High School on January 3, 2008. Schools represented included: UMPI, St. Xaviers in Nova Scotia, UMO, Clark University, Brown University, Bates College, Northeastern University, NMCC, Norwich University, USM, UMF, Maine Maritime Academy, and Daniel Webster. The Caribou Perfoming Arts Center was the setting for the forty minute gathering that afforded the entire seniors class an opportunity to hear from recent CHS grads about the college experience, notably the first year experience. Thought provoking questions generated by the two class advisors and student council advisor, considered such topics as academic challenges, time management, adjusting to new found freedoms, social and cultural experiences, college reading and writing demands, rigor of the senior year of high school. A question and answer session followed the question segment of the panel. The session concluded with each panelist offering one suggestion that would help students make the transition to college more successful. Increasing college aspirations is an important goal of the Partnership for College Success Project which helped to organize the panel.
