Economic Diversity Grant for Enrollment

The Economic Diversity Grant for Enrollment (EDGE), is designed for out-of-state students in the US. These students, should they meet the requirements, are eligible to receive a grant to help offset their out-of-state tuition rate.

The University of Maine at Presque Isle is located in Aroostook County, Maine’s northernmost territory and the largest county east of the Mississippi. Over the last two decades, the area has experienced an out-migration of youth, and challenges with economic development.

The University has developed EDGE for two reasons. By encouraging more youth to come into the area, the University hopes to begin a trend of in-migration. There is research that states many college students choose to live where they attended school, and an invigorated, well-educated population will impact the opportunities for economic growth.

Secondly, since many of UMPI’s students come from Aroostook County, it is important to bring in diversity of background, place and thought to achieve a more well-rounded education. The University feels this can be achieved by attracting more out-of-state students.

Parameters:

• Fifty positions have been allotted for UMPI Edge candidates to make a contribution to Aroostook County. These students must be degree-seeking and meet one of the following criteria: top 40% of their class, a B average, or 1000 SAT (critical reading and math) or 21 ACT score.
• Grant is renewable for up to 150 UMPI attempted credits as long as student maintains a 2.5 GPA.
• Citizens of the US or eligible non residents can participate. Five international students per year may also be selected for the program.
• Transfer students will be eligible based on their cumulative grade point average from their sending institution.

If any out of state student, earns and maintains a GPA of 2.5, regardless of their initial eligibility, he/she would be eligible for the waiver.
