What could be more fun than building a boat out of cardboard and then racing it in a pool against some serious competitors for fame, glory, great prizes, and bragging rights? Frankly, not much. And this year, UMPI is opening up this adrenaline rush of an experience to BOTH campus and community members!
UMPI hosts its 2nd annual Cardboard Boat Regatta on Saturday, April 20, in the Gentile Hall Pool. Race time is 4 p.m. Community judging of the boats (for Most Creative, Most UMPI Pride and Most Team Spirit—all bearing a $50 prize) takes place just beforehand from 1-4 p.m. in the Gentile Hall Gym. Everyone is invited and encouraged to stop by, be a part of the festivities, vote for their favorite boats, and then cheer all the teams on during the race!
Up to 18 teams and their boats will be accepted for this year’s competition on a first-come, first-served basis. Click on Entry Form and Rules for the official registration form. Registration deadline is Friday, April 5.
Teams will race their boats down one length of the pool, get out and then back into the boat, and then race to the opposite end. Boats may race up to three heats in the pool, so they need to withstand prolonged water exposure. A bracket system will be used to determine the winner. The winning team snags $250 for their efforts. For those boats that don’t make it, not to worry—there’s a fifth and final prize category: Most Epic Sink, worth $100.

Need more excitement?
As a special treat, the public is welcome to take part in UMPI’s Beach Bash, which will be going on in the gym from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. prior to the regatta. Enjoy a 65-foot-long inflatable obstacle course, mechanical surfboard, opportunity to make a wax hand, smoothies, and more. Bring your family and make a day of it!
