President's Biography

Dr. Donald N. Zillman has served as President of the University of Maine at Presque Isle since 2006. He also serves a unique dual role as the Edward S. Godfrey Professor of Law at the University of Maine School of Law.

President Zillman came to the University with a wealth of administrative and professional experience. He first took on administrative duties in Maine at the University of Maine Law School where he served as the Dean for eight years from 1991-1998. He served as Interim Provost and Academic Vice President of the University of Maine from 1999-2000 and as Interim President of the University of Maine at Fort Kent from 2001-2002.

Prior to his work in Maine, President Zillman served as the director of the Energy Law Center at the University of Utah School of Law from 1979 to 1986.

While administrative duties have kept him on a brisk schedule, President Zillman has always kept one foot firmly planted in the classroom. He has been a professor for more than 30 years, serving as a faculty member at Arizona State University from 1974-1979, the University of Utah from 1979-1990 - he received the law school's Outstanding Teacher Award while he was there - and the University of Maine School of Law from 1991 to the present. He also teaches the occasional course at this University. His teaching and scholarship have concentrated on energy, environmental and natural resources law and the constitutional governance of the military.

Earlier in his career, he served as Judicial Clerk for the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals and as a U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps officer. He was third in command as Special Assistant Attorney General for the State of Arizona.

His research has produced ten books, chapters in six other books, and more than 50 scholarly articles including ones in the leading legal journals of the University of Texas, Georgetown University, George Washington University, the University of North Carolina, and Notre Dame University.

He recently achieved the distinct honor as the co-author of two new books published by the world's leading academic publishing houses - Oxford University Press and Cambridge University Press. Oxford University Press describes itself as the "largest university press in the world" and Cambridge University Press was founded by royal charter from King Henry VIII and describes itself as the "oldest printer and publisher in the world."

Beyond the Carbon Economy - Energy Law in Transition (Oxford University Press, 2008), co-edited with Catherine Redgwell, Lila Barrera-Hernandez and Yinka Omorogbe, explores the legal ramifications of the unsustainability of our carbon-based, global economy. The book was discussed at a conference of the International Bar Associations, held recently in Copenhagen, Denmark. Strategic Legal Writing (Cambridge University Press, 2008), which Zillman co-authored with colleague Evan J. Roth, Assistant U.S. Attorney in Portland, is designed to help law students sharpen their writing skills.

President Zillman has presented papers at 35 scholarly and professional conferences throughout the United States and in Canada, South Africa, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, and Australia.

Though administrative and faculty work, research and presentations require much of his time, President Zillman has always made room for running. In the last 25 years, he has completed 15 marathons and approximately 550 shorter races. He also has completed ten 180-mile-long Bicycle Treks Across Maine for the Maine Lung Association.

President Zillman earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, his Master of Laws from the University of Virginia, and his Doctor of Laws from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
