The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Reed Art Gallery will present Director’s Choice: Favorite Selections from the University Collections from Feb. 7 to April 4, 2025. The exhibition showcases a dynamic mix of artistic styles and mediums, offering an extraordinary glimpse into the University’s extensive and esteemed art collection. The public is invited to view the exhibition throughout the show’s run and attend the Opening Reception on Friday, Feb. 7, from 6-8 p.m. This reception is being held in conjunction with the Presque Isle First Friday Art Walk. The Reed Gallery is located on the second floor of the University’s Center for Innovative Learning.
The exhibition features paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures and spans a range of artistic approaches, from the timeless beauty of traditional academic realism to the daring innovations of cutting-edge abstraction. Highlighted works include pieces by internationally celebrated artists such as Alberto Giacometti, Andy Warhol, and Gaston Lachaise, alongside works by some of Maine’s most influential artists, including Bernard Langlais, Frederick Lynch, Eric Hopkins, and Ellen Gutekunst.
“The visual arts are an important component of the University of Maine at Presque Isle experience. This exhibition is a celebration of the diversity and richness of our extensive art collection,” Frank Sullivan, Director of the Reed Gallery, said. “It’s a unique opportunity to showcase renowned artists from around the world while also honoring the incredible talent that has emerged from Maine’s long standing, vibrant art community.”
Director’s Choice invites viewers to explore the connections between varying artistic movements and perspectives, creating a dialogue between classic and contemporary works. The exhibition underscores UMPI’s commitment to fostering an appreciation of the arts within the local community and beyond.
The Feb. 7 reception is free and open to the public, offering attendees the chance to meet with the gallery director and learn more about the featured works. Light refreshments will be served.
