Disability Services

Mission Statement

Students Support Services provides assistance for students with documented disabilities. These services are designed to create educational access for students with disabilities at UMPI by providing or coordinating disability accommodations, giving information about the University and available resources to students and families, and educating the campus community. Some of the services provided or coordinated for students with disabilities include testing accommodations, note takers, ordering alternate format texts, classroom relocation, and advisement on disability issues, and housing related accommodations.  Staff members promote self-determination and personal responsibility for students with disabilities by educating them about their rights and responsibilities so that they can make informed choices in order to meet or exceed the standards expected of all students on campus.

It is the policy of The University of Maine System to provide reasonable accommodations for all qualified individuals with disabilities. Federal law, the Rehabilitation Act of 1993, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, and the Maine Human Rights Act established the rights of individuals with disabilities. These laws provide that the recipients of federal funds, employers and places of public access, shall make reasonable accommodation to the known physical psychological and learning limitations of an otherwise qualified person with a disability.
