Dr. Linda Graves publishes third textbook

Dr. Linda Graves, a Medical Laboratory Technology Professor at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, has published her third book, Clinical Laboratory Chemistry, along with her co-author Robert Sunheimer of the State University of New York.

Dr. Graves, a faculty member since 1976, has been working on this book for the past five years. Clinical Laboratory Chemistry was published in July 2010 by Pearson; her first two books, published with Prentice Hall, were Outline Review of Medical Technology/ Clinical Laboratory Science and Case Studies in Clinical Laboratory Science.

Braden Theater to host official premiere of UMPI short film, The Proposal

A short film that had its beginnings in a University of Maine at Presque Isle course on screenwriting and filmmaking – and was completed by a Hollywood cinematographer and a nationally acclaimed writer – will appear on the big screen for one night only when the Braden Theater hosts the official film premiere of The Proposal on Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010, from 5-6:30 p.m. Seating is limited and tickets are $10 each. This half-hour film presentation was directed by Zoran Popovic – the cinematographer for the 2008 film War, Inc. – and co-directed by award-winning writer Cathie Pelletier. Pelletier taught the UMPI screenwriting course where the film was conceived and gave students in the class a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with Popovic and gain an understanding of what it takes to turn a screenplay into a movie.

Presque Isle Chamber to be subject of business case study by UMPI professor

The Presque Isle Area Chamber of Commerce will be the subject of a business case study created by a University of Maine at Presque Isle Business faculty member that, once completed, will be able to be used around the world in the teaching of college business students.

UMPI Associate Professor Robert Murray, who is writing the case study, said, “The Chamber’s story is ideal for instruction because, although half of all business majors indicate that they would like to start their own business some day, most have no idea what services a chamber of commerce provides to entrepreneurs.”

UMPI hosts annual Campus Club and Community Fair

The University of Maine at Presque Isle will host its annual Community and Campus Club Fair on Wednesday, Sept. 15, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Campus Center Multipurpose Room.

For the past 15 years, the University of Maine at Presque Isle has kicked off the academic year with this event, which allows campus clubs and organizations to showcase and promote their groups to the student body and the community.

UMPI to unveil new sculpture during Homecoming festivities

Officials with the University of Maine at Presque Isle will host a special unveiling ceremony during Homecoming 2010 festivities on Friday, Sept. 17 near Folsom Hall to celebrate a new outdoor sculpture on campus that has been installed as part of the State of Maine’s Percent for Art program.

The unveiling of the stone sculpture To the Other Side – which was created by Arrowsic-based artist Andreas von Huene – will take place immediately after UMPI President Don Zillman delivers the State of the University Address, which is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. in Wieden Auditorium.

The installation of the sculpture symbolizes the final step in the $2 million renovation project completed at Folsom Hall, the University’s major classroom building, back in 2008.

UMPI hosts management course for the fall semester

The University of Maine at Presque Isle will be offering two courses this fall beginning Tuesday, Oct. 5 and Wednesday, Oct. 20 as part of its American Management Association’s certificate programs. The course registration deadline is seven days prior to each course starting date.

These fall courses, part of a multi-course curriculum leading to Certificates in Management and Human Resources Management, are specifically created to meet the unique needs of working professionals who want to be more effective in their current positions and better prepared for future advancement, according to Keith Madore, campus AMA coordinator.

SAGE kicks off fall class offerings

A University of Maine at Presque Isle program that serves local residents over 50 and believes in “learning for life” will host its fall kick-off with a luncheon event at 11:15 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 17 in the Campus Center.

Seniors Achieving Greater Education [SAGE] has worked for more than a decade to bring short courses in arts, sciences, and specialty areas to the region’s senior community. SAGE is one of 16 senior colleges in the Maine Senior College Network, and the only one north of Orono.

At the Sept. 17th luncheon, participants will have the opportunity to socialize with SAGE members. Following lunch, they will learn all about upcoming SAGE classes. This fall, SAGE officials are offering 13 courses and learning excursions – on topics ranging from classic novels to Genealogy to UFO’s and Astronomy. Learning excursions include trips to an Amish farm in Fort Fairfield and the Homestead Lodge and Big Wheel Game Preserve in Oxbow.

UMPI announces Educator of the Year, Distinguished Alumni awardees

The University of Maine at Presque Isle will honor two alumni during its Annual Alumni Luncheon and Awards Ceremony, held as part of the University’s Homecoming 2010 activities the weekend of Sept. 17-19.

Alumna Marjorie Queen will be honored with the Educator of the Year Award, which is presented to an alumnus/alumna who has received ongoing recognition as an outstanding educator. This recipient may also have shown active or supportive involvement with the Alumni Association, support of the university, a successful career that reflects well on the University, and outstanding leadership qualities.

Alumna Sherry Churchill will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award, which is presented to an alumnus/alumna who has made long-term contributions to the Alumni Association or the University, or who has received professional recognition that has reflected positively on the University.

Reed Gallery hosts closing reception for 2010 Senior Art Thesis Exhibition

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Reed Fine Art Gallery will host a closing reception for the 2010 Senior Thesis Exhibition on Friday, Sept. 10 from 4-6 p.m.

The show, which has been on display throughout the summer, features the selected works of nine UMPI Fine Art students from their solo exhibitions. The Reed Fine Art Gallery has presented a Senior Thesis Exhibition each year for the last three years as an opportunity for young and upcoming artists in northern Maine to showcase their work to the public and to provide a forum for these students to discuss their works.

Homecoming 2010 activities kick of Sept. 17

The University of Maine at Presque Isle is hosting a jam-packed Homecoming 2010 celebration from Friday, Sept. 17 to Sunday, Sept. 19, offering everything from a concert by famed interactive retro band Motor Booty Affair to a silent auction to athletic events, socials, alumni games and the annual Hall of Fame dinner.
