Passing of Royal Goheen

University of Maine at Presque Isle Office of the President.

Dear UMPI Community,

I am saddened to share with you news of the passing of Dr. Royal Goheen, known by so many of us here at the University of Maine at Presque Isle and throughout Aroostook County for his long and dedicated service to UMPI.

Royal arrived here in 1969, first serving as chairperson for the Division of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, and later, from 1986 to 1997, as our Director of Athletics. In addition to overseeing an important time in UMPI Athletics, he helped establish our Athletic Hall of Fame and University Senate, and served in key leadership positions with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics at the state, regional, and national levels. In 1989-90, he was recognized as that organization’s Athletic Administrator of the Year.

While he gave so much of his time and talents to our campus, he also found time for community service–he was a past president and lieutenant governor of the Presque Isle Kiwanis Club and president of the Northeast District YMCA.

He touched many lives during his tenure here and cared deeply about this institution–he will be remembered fondly as a proud UMPI Owl.

Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time. Arrangements and an obituary are being finalized and will be shared with campus once available.
