UMPI Portfolio Assessment Policy for Credit
At the University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI), we value the knowledge and skills you’ve gained outside the classroom. Our Portfolio Assessment Policy allows you to earn college credit for relevant work, volunteer, or life experiences, helping you save time and money while moving closer to graduation. This credit for prior learning option supports students who bring professional expertise and personal accomplishments to their education journey. By compiling a detailed portfolio, you demonstrate how your experiences align with UMPI’s course objectives. Our faculty carefully review each portfolio to determine if college-level learning has occurred and if it warrants credit. Understanding this policy ensures you are fully prepared to submit a successful portfolio and maximize your educational investment. What Is Portfolio Assessment?
Portfolio assessment is a structured process for students to demonstrate college-level learning gained outside traditional academic settings. It involves compiling evidence, such as work samples, certifications, and reflective narratives, that reveal your skills align with specific UMPI course outcomes.
Eligibility Requirements
- Students must be matriculated into an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree program to be eligible for Prior Learning Assessment. Non-degree students and students enrolled in certificate programs of fewer than 30 credits must receive permission from the dean of the college(s) responsible for assessing the portfolio.
- Students must utilize test options such as CLEP, DANTES or Challenge Exams whenever available. When no test option is available, students may request Portfolio Assessment (see below for details) of their prior learning experience.

Students in Bachelor’s degree programs may earn a maximum of 30 credits. In other words, the combination of all forms of Prior Learning Assessment cannot exceed a total of 15 credits for an Associate’s degree or 30 credits for a Bachelor’s degree.

- The fee for Portfolio Assessment is $50 per credit hour. This covers processing and assessment costs. No refunds are given for credits not awarded.
