Aging Well Living Well EXPO takes place at UMPI, celebrates seniors

The Aroostook Agency on Aging presents the Aging Well Living Well EXPO at the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Saturday, June 1, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The agency is partnering with the United Way of Aroostook, AARP, WAGM-TV, UMPI, and SAGE (Seniors Achieving Greater Education) on the event, which also serves as a celebration of SAGE’s 15th anniversary.

The EXPO is especially for people nearing retirement, who are retired, or who want to improve their health and well-being. The EXPO will include informative sessions and event exhibitors sharing products and information to help attendees improve their quality of life and maintain their independence.

“We want this event to serve as a day of learning, exploring opportunities, enhancing health and well-being, and to be a lot of fun for our participants,” Steve Farnham, Aroostook Agency on Aging Executive Director, said.

EXPO booths will be open throughout the day in the Exhibitor Hall at Wieden Gymnasium, and workshops will be held in Pullen Hall. The day’s events include welcoming remarks and a keynote address from 9:15-10 a.m. in Wieden Auditorium by Dr. Marilyn Gugliucci, a Gerontologist from the University of New England Medical School. There will be three workshop sessions: from 10:15-11:20 a.m., 1-2:05 p.m., and 2:15-3:20 p.m. In between the first and second workshop sessions, lunch will be held from 11:20 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Wieden Gymnasium. The day will end with raffle drawings in the Exhibitor Hall.

Workshops include sessions on a wide variety of topics, including Social Security and Medicare, Yoga, Brain Fitness, Ductless Heat Pump Technology, Avoiding Fraud and Scams, Outdoor Exploration, Reverse Annuity Mortgages, Leaving your Legacy, Traditional Medicines, Medicare Benefits, Container Gardening, Zumba, and Nutrition.

For the University in particular, this event serves as a fitting way to celebrate the 15th anniversary of its Seniors Achieving Greater Education program.

“Our senior college members are excited to be part of this day of promoting healthy options for aging well,” Mary Lawrence said. “SAGE participants are celebrating 15 years of actively encouraging well-being with our diverse, low stress—no homework or tests—classes and learning excursions, and this EXPO is an excellent way for all of us to continue that celebration.”

Registration forms can be found online at www.aroostookaging.org/aging-well-expo.html and registration the day of the event will take place from 8:30 to 9 a.m. in the Exhibitor Hall. Cost to attend the EXPO is $8 per person paid in advance, or $10 at the door. This includes parking, lunch, beverages, raffle tickets, workshops and materials. Coffee and beverages will be available throughout the day in Wieden Gym. For more information about the EXPO, contact Steve Farnham at 764-3396 orstevefarnham@aroostookaging.org.
