The University of Maine at Presque Isle is hosting another jam-packed Homecoming celebration from Thursday, Sept. 12 to Sunday, Sept. 15, offering everything from socials and athletic events to alumni games and the annual Hall of Fame dinner. As a special part of this year’s Homecoming weekend, the Inauguration of UMPI’s Eleventh President, Dr. Linda Schott, will take place.
The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Reed Fine Art Gallery will exhibit Wise Women: A Celebration of Their Insights, Courage, and Beauty by world renowned photographer Joyce Tenneson from Sept. 3 through Oct. 12, 2013. The public is invited to view the exhibition throughout the show’s run and attend a special reception on Wednesday, Sept. 11 from 5-7 p.m. with Tenneson speaking at 5:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.
Tenneson’s visit to UMPI and her photographic exhibition are presented through Canon USA’s Explorer of Light program.
Officials with the University of Maine at Presque Isle and Northern Maine Community College held a signing ceremony on Thursday, Aug. 22, in NMCC’s Edmunds Library, finalizing two articulation agreements that ensure UMPI and NMCC students experience a smooth transition when they opt to transfer between institutions.
NMCC President Timothy Crowley and UMPI President Linda Schott led the official signing of the documents, which now can be utilized by students who are preparing for the 2013-2014 academic year.
The University of Maine at Presque Isle and the Wintergreen Arts Center are teaming up to present a very unique and fun-filled 5K fundraiser—the Color Presque Isle 5K, where participants will dress in white and get showered with colored powder throughout the course. The event, which serves as a benefit for the Northern Maine Center for the Cultural Arts, will be held on Saturday, Aug. 24 at 9 a.m. starting at Riverside Park. Registration begins at 8 a.m.
Proceeds from this exciting event—the first of its kind in The County—will be used to further the development of the Northern Maine Center for the Cultural Arts [NMCCA].
Members of Speaking Up For Us (SUFU), a statewide self-advocacy network, planted a tree recently at the University of Maine at Presque Isle to celebrate the network’s 20th anniversary. The tree planting took place on July 9 outside of Gentile Hall. Similar tree planting ceremonies in honor of the network are being held throughout the state this year.
The staff at the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s health and wellness facility are celebrating a Week of Wellness between Sept. 25 and 27, providing campus and community members of all ages with fun and free activities focused on healthy living. The event is sponsored in part by Cary Medical Center, and is free and open to the public. Free prizes and snacks will be provided throughout the three-day event.
The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Reed Fine Art Gallery presents the 2013 Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition, featuring selected works created by five graduating UMPI art students, now through August 17. The public is invited to view the exhibition and attend a reception, being held in conjunction with the First Friday Art Walk, on Friday, Aug 2 from 5-7 p.m. in the Reed Gallery.
The Reed Fine Art Gallery has presented a Senior Thesis Exhibition each year for the last six years as an opportunity for young and upcoming artists in northern Maine to showcase their work to the public and to provide a forum for them to discuss their art.
University of Maine at Presque Isle officials are pleased to have three County men include the campus as part of their five phase walk in honor of President John F. Kennedy and his brother U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy. The three men will walk 40 miles from Houlton to UMPI on Saturday, July 27.
This will be the final of four practice walks leading up to a 50-mile walk being undertaken in August by Larry Berz, Dr. Arthur Selander, and Nicholas Boggs. Their undertaking is in remembrance of Robert F. Kennedy, who hiked 50 miles from Washington D. C. to Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia, strongly challenged and inspired by his brother President Kennedy’s call for national physical conditioning and renewed vigor.
The University of Maine at Presque Isle is in the process of replacing dozens of older computer monitors around campus thanks to the donation of 38 flat-panel monitors by local businessman Tim Lavin, the President and CEO of BalanceBPO. The gift is valued at approximately $1,500.
Dr. Ray Rice, Chair of the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s College of Arts and Sciences, participated in three higher education presentations during the 2012-2013 academic year, providing the University with important regional and national exposure for its LOOC (Local Open Online Course) project—also known as the UMPI OpenU initiative—and its data-driven transformation strategies with Project Compass.
