The University of Maine at Presque Isle will welcome Mark Anderson of the University of Maine for a talk on sustainability on Thursday, Sept. 15 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the GIS Lab (Folsom 201). The talk is being hosted by UMPI’s Environmental Studies and Sustainability Program and the UMPI EPSCoR grant project.
A University of Maine at Presque Isle program that serves local residents over 50 and believes in “learning for life” will host its fall kick-off event at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 16 in the Campus Center.
Seniors Achieving Greater Education [SAGE] has worked for more than a decade to bring short courses in arts, sciences, and specialty areas to the region’s senior community. SAGE is one of 17 senior colleges in the Maine Senior College Network, and one of two senior colleges north of Bangor.

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Reed Fine Art Gallery will present the exhibition Landscape – Love & Longing from September 11 through October 22, bringing to Maine the work of artist Jennifer Pazienza, Professor of Art Education at the University of New Brunswick. The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Geospatial Information Technology Center has received a grant totaling $29,000 from the Quimby Family Foundation to complete non-motorized trail mapping efforts in the region using GIS and GPS technology. Dr. Chunzeng Wang, director of UMPI’s GIS Laboratory and grant project coordinator, was presented with the grant by Quimby Family Foundation member and Burt’s Bees co-founder Roxanne Quimby during a grant recipient luncheon held at Harraseeket Inn in Freeport on Aug. 26.
Community members and education officials gathered on Thursday, Sept. 1 for the Houlton Higher Education Center’s 10th anniversary celebration, which included an open house and an official program that marked the Center’s first decade of providing close-to-home educational opportunities for the region.
College students in Korea soon will be using a textbook co-authored by a University of Maine at Presque Isle professor as part of their coursework when the book Clinical Laboratory Chemistry is published in Korean.
Dr. Linda Graves, Medical Laboratory Technology professor at UMPI, and her co-author Robert Sunheimer of the State University of New York, had their book published last summer by Pearson. The textbook was the third publication for Dr. Graves, but this is the first time any of her books have been translated into another language.
