Houlton Center Update 11/10/2025

University of Maine at Presque Isle Office of the President.

Dear UMPI Community,

As we near the end of the Fall semester, I wanted to provide another update about the Houlton Center. Since my last email in May, when I shared plans to transition out of the building by the end of the calendar year (December 31), we have been closely monitoring resource usage and assessing the in-person needs of our students there.

We have confirmed that, for the vast majority of our students accessing services at the Houlton Center, the educational needs have shifted dramatically toward flexible, remote education and utilizing Zoom and associated technologies. For those students, UMPI’s YourPace competency-based online offerings, or a combination of online and live instruction at our Presque Isle campus, fulfills their needs and we are offering hotspots and laptop rentals to best support them.  As with all of our students, regardless of their physical location, we will continue to ensure that we provide the advising, tutoring, and support services that they require, whether they attend in person at Presque Isle or through any remote/online format.

As we finalize this transition, our thanks to the Community Living Association, the building’s new owner, for working with us as we’ve moved through this process, as well as to our valued partners, the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, the Maine Educational Opportunity Center, and Network Maine, who will continue to be located in the building. While UMPI will no longer have a presence there, we are so pleased to be continuing our commitment to the greater Houlton community as we always have and serving learners in this region in the ways that best support them.
