To the UMPI Community,
I write this morning following yesterday’s tragic violence and loss of life at Brown University and amid the continuing reality of political violence impacting college campuses across the nation.
Acts of violence have no place in higher education or in a democratic society and stand in direct opposition to the core mission of universities: the pursuit of knowledge, the dignity of every individual, and the respectful exchange of ideas.
Our colleges and universities must be safe spaces for us all—where every member of our community can learn, work, and live without fear, and where disagreement is addressed through dialogue rather than fear of violence.
In moments like these, our shared values of inclusion, respect, and care for one another matter more than ever. All members of our community– in Maine, across the country, and our world– have my thanks in your continuing support for each other through your compassion and humanity.
I encourage anyone in need to contact UMPI’s Student Support Services (207-768-9732, mary.barbosa@maine.edu), our office of Student Affairs (207-768-9518), or our counseling services (833-646-1526) for support and resources.
