Our Vision

In our Medical Laboratory Sciences programs, faculty are committed to providing exceptional education and training that builds entry-level competencies across core lab disciplines – from blood banking and microbiology to hematology and clinical chemistry. Guided by our vision – “Providing Quality MLT & MLS Education to Communities Across the State of Maine and Beyond” – we prepare graduates to support patient care wherever they’re needed.

Be a Diagnostic Detective

Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLTs) play a critical role in patient care by producing accurate lab results that help inform diagnosis and treatment. Using advanced biomedical instruments and highly skilled manual techniques, MLTs analyze blood and other specimens, verify accuracy, and deliver the data providers depend on. An estimated 70% of medical decisions are based on laboratory results.

Complete Your MLS Degree on the Go

UMPI’s online MLS program is built for working, certified MLTs, recognizing existing certification and professional experience – without additional clinical rotations or practicums. With seven-week course blocks and flexible, asynchronous coursework, students can keep working while expanding their scope of practice. Full-time and part-time options make it easy to move at a pace that fits busy schedules.

Solving Maine’s Lab Shortage

The United States is experiencing a nationwide clinical laboratory workforce shortage due to several factors: an aging workforce, a vacancy rate that exceeds the number of clinical laboratory graduates, an increase in demand for laboratory services, and practice changes with new technologies.

Program Outcomes

Since the inception of the collaborative MLT program and its first graduating class in 2004, the average first-time pass rate on the certification exam for program graduates is 95%.

Professionalism in Practice

The MLS Program requires that students behave professionally and conduct themselves as expected of employees in the workplace. As medical laboratory professionals, our duty is to the patient, placing their welfare first and ensuring that each patient receives the highest quality of care.

Medical Laboratory Sciences Degrees

Whether you’re starting from scratch or building on years of experience, UMPI has a program designed to meet you where you are.

The Medical Laboratory Technology and Medical Laboratory Science programs are collaborative efforts between the University of Maine at Presque Isle and the University of Maine at Augusta, developed in partnership with hospital laboratories across the state. Clinical affiliates provide supervised practicum placements that connect students directly to Maine’s healthcare community.

Medical Laboratory Technology

Medical laboratory technicians perform, develop, evaluate, and correlate; assure accuracy and validity of laboratory information; direct and supervise clinical laboratory resources and operations; and collaborate in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

The medical laboratory technician has diverse and multi-level functions in the areas of collecting, processing, and analyzing biological specimens and other substances, principles and methodologies, performance of assays, problem-solving, troubleshooting techniques, significance of clinical procedures and results, principles, and practices of quality assessment, for all major areas practiced in the contemporary clinical laboratory.

They have the requisite knowledge and skills to educate laboratory professionals, other health care professionals, and others in the laboratory practice and the public.

The ability to relate to people, a capacity for calm and reasoned judgment, and demonstrating commitment to the patient are essential qualities.  Communication skills extend to consultative interactions with other members of the healthcare team, external relations, customer service, and patient education.  Laboratory professionals demonstrate ethical and moral attitudes and principles necessary for gaining and maintaining the confidence of patients, professional associates, and the community.
