We will host an unveiling and dedication ceremony for a memorial sculpture created in honor of the Zillmans by longtime UMPI faculty member Dr. Leo-Paul Cyr. Following the ceremony, members of Portland Ballet will present a special performance dedicated to the Zillmans in the Campus Center MPR. The theme for this year’s symposium is “Writing the Landscapes of Maine.” Events begin at 1:30 p.m. with author readings, followed by a brief intermission and book sales hosted by Neighborhood Books. A panel discussion will begin at 2:45. In this talk, drawing on his bestselling books “Night of the Living Rez” and “Fire Exit,” Morgan Talty will explore what it means to write a landscape that has always been speaking, rather than pretend he is the one in charge of it. This talk will serve as the keynote address for UMPI’s Voices in the North Country Writers Symposium on Thursday, Oct. 15. Events will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Campus Center Multi-Purpose Room and include readings and a panel discussion.
