This show explores the varied and vibrant artistic vision of Roger J. Morin (1944-2019), an accomplished painter and educator who was based in Houlton, Maine from 2003 until his passing. Spanning Classical Realism, Impressionism, Figurative, Surrealist, and Abstract Expressionist styles, the exhibition features self-portraits, landscapes, and imaginative compositions recently gifted to UMPI by Morin's estate. Visitors are invited to discover the many facets of Morin's art--and the legacy of his creative and civic life.

Telling Your Stories: Lessons from Mel Allen's Lifetime of Writing & Editing

Using stories he published from first-time writers, Mel Allen will share what he has learned during his decades of writing and editing for Yankee Magazine.
Attendees will learn the qualities of successful stories and pitches. Each participant is encouraged to submit a writing sample up to 1,000 words to be used in discussions.
The workshop registration fee is $20 ($10 for students) and may be paid in advance or at the door. Space is limited. The registration deadline is Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 5 p.m. Proceeds from the workshop will benefit UMPI’s Voices in the North Country Writers Symposium, taking place later this year.

UMPI’s Leadership and Belonging Council will welcome Jessica Gifford for a Zoom-only workshop, “The Friendship Fast Track: The Key to Connecting Quickly,” on Thursday, Feb. 19, 6-7:30 p.m. Gifford is the founder of Project Connect, a 6-week, evidence-based, small-group program that provides a “fast track to friendship.” In this workshop, Gifford will introduce new research on loneliness and friendship and what actually creates connection (aka, the “Friendship Formula”), lead small-group conversations, and give attendees three easy exercises they can use for real-life connections.
