What is an ELO?
At UMPI, ELOs are hands-on, paid experiences outside of the traditional classroom with an emphasis on community-based career exploration.
HOW TO APPLY TO PARTICIPATE IN AN ELO @ UMPI
1. Complete the ELO Google Intake Survey
2. Meet with Sarah Bushey (ELO Coordinator) to discuss your plans and request
3. Student will be added to the ELO LMS and will complete all assigned courses and/or modules before the ELO begins
4. Meet with Dr. Bushey again to review and sign ELO forms (ELO Learning Agreement, ELO Syllabus, media release form(s), Memorandum of Agreement)
5. Student meets with mentor to build their ELO syllabus if student needs assistance.
6. Student meets with Danielle Pelkey, Assistant Director of Financial Aid, to establish payment (danielle.pelkey@maine.edu)
7. Student determines work hours/times each week and sets up bi-weekly meeting times with Dr. Bushey (TBD based on ELO length)
8. ELO begins once all paperwork has been approved and payment method has been completed
9. Upon the completion ofthe work experience, students must finish the remainder of the “ELO: Choose Your Own Adventure” course in the LMS and submit their final reflection and
presentation or artifact. The presentation materials should be what they are planning to use for University Day.
10. At the conclusion of the ELO, the student will have completed a final project with an artifact
and/or presentation at University Day, Orientation, Accepted Student Day, or some other event agreed upon by the student and ELO Coordinator. Finally, the student may want to meet with the mentor at the conclusion of the ELO to determine where to place the experience on the student’s resume (optional).
11. All ELO artifacts completed by the student should be sent to the mentor for approval and the
mentor will be asked for feedback on the experience.12. Feedback will be collected from the mentor.
