The University of Maine at Presque Isle will celebrate the completion of the state-of-the-art, four-season Zillman Family Greenhouse with an official opening and dedication ceremony on Friday, Sept. 27, at 2 p.m. The new building is located next to Gentile Hall. All are welcome to attend this free event.
The dedication event will include a sign unveiling, ribbon cutting, and ceremonial planting. A reception will be held inside the greenhouse following the dedication; refreshments will be served. On display outside the greenhouse will be several pieces of equipment to be used in conjunction with the greenhouse and UMPI’s Agricultural Sciences and Agribusiness program, including a new John Deere tractor and gator, and a DJI Inspire II drone for precision ag work and mapping.
The teaching and research greenhouse—a $935,000, 2,400-square-foot structure located in a spot adjacent to Gentile Hall and close to the campus’s year-round composting site—includes two climate-controlled research labs, a teaching classroom, and a faculty office for the Dr. Robert Vinton Akeley Chair of Agricultural Science and Agribusiness. UMPI’s Ag program will begin using the new facility for classes and research once the space is dedicated.
