State Authorization and Licensure at UMPI

Our University offers several programs that lead to licensure or certification required for employment in a given occupation. Programs offered by the University may or may not meet the conditions for licensure or certification in all states.

The University makes effort to ensure that information about compliance with state licensure requirements is up to date, but licensure and certification requirements change frequently and you are encouraged to contact the licensure or certification authority to determine current requirements.

Programs Leading to Licensure or Certification

UMPI offers several programs that lead to professional licensure or certification:

  • Elementary Education: Prepares students for general education certification in Maine.
  • Secondary Education: Offers certifications in subjects like English, Social Studies, Mathematics, and Life Science.
  • Physical Education: Equips students for physical education teacher certification.
  • Medical Laboratory Technology: Prepares graduates for national certification exams such as ASCP or AMT.
  • Nursing: In partnership with UMFK, this program leads to eligibility for the NCLEX-RN exam.
  • Physical Therapist Assistant: Graduates are prepared to take the national PTA certification exam.
  • Social Work: Leads to eligibility for Licensed Social Worker (LSW) and Mental Health Rehabilitation Technician (MHRT) certifications.
