There is a lot that goes into planning a course regardless of which modality you will teach. It can be pretty overwhelming so the Instructional Designers at the Center for Teaching & Learning are here to help you!

Course Design & Development Process

Let’s take a quick look at the process for designing and development.

Using Backwards Design, we start with the end in mind: what do we want students to be able to do by the end of their time with us? These are the Course Learning Outcomes. Next, we determine what evidence we will look for to assess whether students have met those outcomes. Those are the final summative assessments. We also want to keep track of learner progress along the way, so it is important to plan for ongoing formative assessment.

It is important to consider the course modality, so we will help you to explore what is unique about teaching live in-person, online synchronously, hybrid or blended combinations of remote and in-person, asynchronous online, hyflex (which includes all of the above!), as well as self-paced online learning in our YourPace CBE program.

After you have planned out your course, it’s time to start developing the instructional materials and assessments. First, we will show you the required elements of your syllabus document. Then, we will help you to locate resources and create your own. This includes an investigation into making these resources accessible for all learners. Finally, we will describe our Media Production Studio where we can support you to create some of your own multimedia artifacts like lightboard videos or podcasts.
