CLASS of 2021 Virtual Commencement
For our 112th Commencement, UMPI hosted a Virtual Commencement Ceremony with a special live component for graduating students. Our goal was to celebrate the Class of 2021 in some very special ways despite a public health emergency that prevented the UMPI community, family, and friends from gathering together for a live, in-person commencement. While nothing could replace the live graduation experience, this event provided us with another way of gathering together for a special celebration that honored our graduates and recognized their achievements.
Our Virtual Commencement took place on Saturday, May 8, at 10:30 a.m. on UMPI’s Youtube page. Please check out the special website we’ve dedicated to this Virtual Commencement. At www.umpi.edu/virtual-graduation, visitors can view the Commencement proceedings in their entirety, click in to a specific speech, and peruse the official Commencement program. A curated gallery of social media posts connected with UMPI’s 2021 graduation is also featured.
Soar on, UMPI Owls!
President Ray Rice
An electronic Commencement Announcement will be emailed to you on Monday, April 26th as a PDF.
Cap, Gown, and Tassels
As you cannot physically pick up your caps and gowns at the Campus Store, we have cancelled the original cap and gown order and have a new plan in place for you. UMPI will ship a free cap, tassel, and gown to your home. We need you to enter the order information here. Orders must be placed by APRIL 7th.
We are planning for an in-person photo opportunity on Monday, May 3. This opportunity will allow you the option to walk across the graduation stage in your regalia, receive your diploma covers, be greeted by President Rice (socially distanced, of course), and get a professional photo taken. Student cohort groups will be assigned by College and program to sessions taking place at 9AM, 11AM and 1PM. Please see the schedule below. Although family or friends are not able to be invited to this event, you will be able to gather with fellow classmates, faculty and staff to share this special occasion. Please note that to ensure all members of the graduating class have this opportunity, including those who are not able to come to campus on May 3, we will be offering this same opportunity during our Homecoming 2021 activities as long as we can safely do so.

We highly encourage you to submit a personal photo and message to be included on your individual slide. We have set up a form where you will be able to submit your photo, message, and name pronunciation. Photos and messages need to be sent from your maine.edu account no later than Wednesday, April 21 to be included in the slideshow.
Live Post-Graduation Celebration
Immediately following UMPI’s Virtual Commencement Ceremony, connect with your UMPI faculty and others in live, post-graduation celebration events via Zoom. These small group virtual gatherings allow you to meet up in real time with your UMPI program faculty, staff, classmates, and the Alumni Association so we can share the excitement of the day with you and celebrate your achievements! Links to individual Zoom meetings by Academic Program will be available on the main page of the my.umpi.edu campus portal on graduation day. The links will be active from 11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. on May 8. We hope you’ll join us!

For those wishing to participate in a more traditional ceremony, 2020 and 2021 graduates will have the opportunity to participate in UMPI’s 2022 Commencement Exercises.
