How do I get started?

Once you have notified us that you would like to participate in courses as an UMPI OpenU learner, we will gather some basic information about you and provide you with access to Blackboard (the system UMPI uses to deliver online programs). You will receive a user name and password and will then be able to view your course and any materials, videos or podcasts your instructor posts, and engage in Blackboard discussion boards. Once the course gets underway, you will be able to take part in the course just like any UMPI student taking the course for credit. Keep in mind that the rules of civil discourse apply and that the instructor has the right to remove you from the course at any time for violating these policies.

What kind of courses can I take?

We offer a variety to OpenU courses; please check out the “Course Offerings” section of this webpage. (OpenU courses are subject to change by semester)

What rules do I need to follow while participating in a course?

All participants in UMPI OpenU Courses are asked to follow the rules of civil discourse – be respectful and inclusive, listen to others’ point of view, and make sure comments and criticism are constructive. Be aware that instructors have the right, at any time, to remove you from the course. Please make sure you understand the expectations before the start of your course. Read the syllabus to clarify any questions you may have.

Can I earn academic credit for an UMPI OpenU course?

As an OpenU participant, you cannot receive academic credit for the courses you take. However, UMPI OpenU learners will have the option during UMPI’s add/drop period to enroll in the courses for credit (thus becoming an UMPI student), but the courses may not be added for credit once the add/drop period is over.

What does it mean to earn “prior learning experience credit(s)”?

At some point in the future, if you become a UMPI student, you may be able to earn a total of 6 credit hours of prior learning credit from your participation in UMPI OpenU Courses. In order to take advantage of this opportunity, you will need to submit a portfolio of the work you have completed in at least two courses, including course syllabi and pertinent materials.
